Which way should I follow?

Firstly, you should believe that the excess weight you have is not your fate, you need to and you can get rid of it.

If your body mass index is over 30 kg / M2, you should get medical support. As we mentioned before, you should know medical problems caused by obesity and should motivate to get rid of the excess weight.  Steps will be as follows.

1. In the first place, you need to contact a specialized center for obesity. Possible endocrine causes of obesity should be investigated in the first place although they are the cause in less than 1% of all the obese patients. The most common ones of these are  hypothyroidism depending on thyroid hormones deficiency and Cushing's disease  due to excess cortisol produced by adrenal glands. Thyroid function can be evaluated with a simple blood test. The increased level  of a hormone called TSH indicates hypothyroidism. After taking a low dose of cortisol pill at night, cortisol levels in the blood at 8.00  in the morning will be diagnostic for Cushing disease.

2. In patients with a short term weight gain, some physicological problems, especially major depression may be the cause of obesity. Dining can be turned into a psychological defense mechanism. So eating is a form of manifesting the current emotional state of these patients. In this case, psychological support is needed. Although it can be long and laborious. , it is treatable.

The steps of the treatment of psychological support

- Self-monitoring and writing down the eating habits

- Identifying the eating stimulus (which social situations is leading you to eat )

- Controling the stimulus

- Development of alternative behaviors (Calling a friend, reading a book or magazine when you need to eat.)

- Reward yourself (if you can control your urge to eat, reward yourself, for example,  buy a shoe or cloth you want for a long time)

- Get used to the new order of life

- Environmental support

3. In patients with non-endocrine obesity disease,  first step is to trying to change their eating habits under the supervision of a dietitian. A controlled diet and regular exercise program to lose weight should always be attempted. Some drugs (which effects fat metabolism) can assist in this process. Drug use must be approved by an endocrinologist.

4. After at least 2 diet programs or 6 six-month diet, patients who can not lose weight or returned to their old weight are candidates for surgery.
